Fernwoods First Season In Montville

Thank you for visiting our Blog site, we hope this will serve as a venue to keep folks informed of what kind of things are happening here at Fernwood. As we become a bit more adept at Blogging (this could take a while) we hope to begin adding pictures, as well as information and thoughts , that you may find helpful or interesting. Feel free to offer up any suggestions on how this Blog may better serve you. We can always use the help.
Our first season here in Montville was a combination of success and long hard work. There is just no perfect time for moving an entire nusery , with its stock of plants, greenhouses, equipment, and tools and expect to be up and running in a few months. Well, we managed to do our best and pull things together with help from a few of good friends .....Thanks to Tim , Barara Jean and Liz, and then Martin and Carol, who came all the way from Massachusetts with specialized tools for dismanteling and reconstructing the greenhouse ....amazing!
During the month of May, with cheery spirits, we opened here on the North Ridge Road and began offering the native and woodland plants we are known for. Visitors this season were able to find Rick available to talk plants , answer questions, and advise customers with their selections. He was also very busy creating new retail and stock areas, building a check out shed, planting new display beds from scratch, and tending to the tasks and chores of our new site.
Everyone seemed to appreciate coming and getting the chance to witness the growth of our new location. Oh, and the patience people had adjusting to the move was a blessing. This helped a lot.
The property here in Montville is still very wooded but with a large open area and many established vegetable gardens. This has been Denise's passion in the plant world and although she shares a love for ornamentals, it has been her work to grow and provide organically grown vegetables for family and others. She has spent years building and amending the soil. Rick's native and woodland plants along with the vegetables and other aspects of the farm, reflect our desire to create a home and nursery with both aesthetics and sustainability in mind.
People coming to the nursery can visit with our four Blue Face Leicester sheep ( three of whom are expecting in April), an eclectic flock of laying hens and their man of the hen house, Mr. Bo Jangles . You are also likely to be met by official greeter, Boreal, our Border Collie mix, who thinks having regular visitors is the best.
In addition to the great plants that are offered at Fernwood, customers will be able to purchase fresh eggs, whole grain and Ciabatta breads, baked goods, fresh vegetables , seedlings , and hand spun yarn from our sheep. With each season, the nusery will hopefully evolve into a place that customers can come to find quality and unusual plants for their garden, as well as products reflecting the home and farm.
It is winter now and we are busy looking over seed catalogs and planning for the new season. As the sun gets stronger and as the days get longer, we look more and more forward to putting our hands in the soil. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in the spring. In the meantime, we will keep a regular diary here on our Blog site. You may always reach us at 589-4726 or at 58 North Ridge Road Montville ,Me 04941. Thanks for visiting. Rick and Denise
